STRESS, BURNOUT & OVERWHELM COUNSELLING

As a psychotherapist and counsellor in Edinburgh, I regularly treat issues relating to stress, burnout and feelings of overwhelm.  Burnout is more than just feeling tired—it’s a deep sense of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion that can happen when stress becomes overwhelming and constant.  Although burnout is linked to stress, the two aren’t the same. Stress is usually temporary, and while it can affect your sleep, energy, and mood, you can sustain daily responsibilities. Burnout is different—it leaves you detached, drained, and demotivated, making even simple tasks feel impossible. It can also bring a sense of hopelessness, as if nothing will change.

Burnout is often linked to workplace dynamics, but it can come from other pressures—caring for loved ones, parenting, or managing a chronic illness. When demands keep piling up and outweigh the resources you have to cope, symptoms of overwhelm and burnout can take hold.  The impact can affect your well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life. It’s important to access support as early as possible to create new systems which assist to recalibrate your energy and motivation
